Empowering Young Leaders in Maha Oya

Youth Action Network Sri Lanka (YAN) successfully conducted a Leadership and Drug Prevention Programme for the students of Bandirekka Maha Vidyalaya, Maha Oya, Ampara, as part of its ongoing commitment to empowering young people and promoting healthier communities.

The programme combined leadership development with evidence-based drug prevention education, equipping students with the knowledge and confidence to become positive role models within their school and community. Through interactive discussions and practical activities, participants strengthened essential leadership skills, including communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and responsible decision-making.

A key component of the programme focused on raising awareness of alcohol and tobacco industry interference. Students explored the strategies used by these industries to influence young people and communities, while learning the importance of challenging misinformation, resisting harmful influences, and advocating for healthier lifestyles.

By encouraging students to think critically and take action, the programme inspired participants to become active leaders who can contribute to building safer, healthier, and more resilient communities.
