On the occasion of International Court of Justice Day, a webinar program was conducted to educate the youth on the NATA Act and its provisions. (National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol Act).

Resources for this program were provided by Mr. Pubudu Sumanasekara, Executive Director, Alcohol and Drug Information Center Sri Lanka. This webinar program also had a very effective discussion today on the laws contained in the NATA Act and how those laws are enforced in Sri Lanka, how those laws are violate and how we as youth could have been enforced for this. More than a hundred people, including young people, attended the webinar.

The National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol is the pioneer government institution which was established by National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol Act, (NATA) No. 27 of 2006 for the purpose of enactment of the legal aspects for alcohol and tobacco prevention in Sri Lanka. The Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO-FCTC) of the World Health Organization is the first Global Health Treaty which was developed by countries in the year 2003, in responses to the globalization of the tobacco epidemic.

Sri Lanka has been constantly addressing the issue of tobacco and Alcohol and we are one of the very first countries that ratified the WHO FCTC, which is a legally binding treaty, where countries are bound to implement evidence-based tobacco control measures.
